Fra balkongen – et blikk på den regionale kunstscenen

Jane Sverdrupsen, director of Rogaland Kunstsenter, is part of the curatorial team for the exhibition «Fra balkongen» at Stavanger kunstmuseum. It presents selected works by artists with ties to Rogaland county.

The exhibition opens to the public at Stavanger kunstmuseum on Saturday 7 November at 11. The planned opening event on Friday 6 November will be closed due to infection control measures. The exhibition runs through Sunday 27 December.

This summer, Stavanger kunstmuseum invited artists with ties to our region to submit works for inclusion in a group exhibition. The coronavirus pandemic made it impossible for the museum to carry out its planned exhibition programme, while the loss of exhibitions and commissions hit artists hard.

In that context, the museum is grateful for the opportunity to assemble an exhibition that shows some of the breadth and quality found in the art field in our region. The exhibition aims to give a picture of contemporary artistic activity in the region and does not have a unifying theme. It includes works that examine the role of the artist, material- and media-specific investigations, humorous and poetic works, perspectives on our contemporary culture, works engaging with nature and conceptions of landscape, works addressing violence and abuse, and works exploring the vulnerability of society and the individual in a time of extreme pressure.

The exhibition title invites several associations. We think of the title as a metaphor for the restricted freedom of movement the pandemic has imposed on us, while it also refers to an experience the audience can take part in when visiting the exhibition.

The selected works are based on the submitted material and do not constitute an assessment of entire artistic practices. The exhibition does not provide a complete picture of the art scene in our region, but shows something of the rich artistic quality represented here.

The exhibition is curated by Hanne Beate Ueland, Vibece Salthe and Helga Nyman from the museum, together with Jane Sverdrupsen from the kunstsenter.

This summer, Stavanger Art Museum invited artists affiliated with our region (Rogaland) to send in proposals for works of art they would like to present in a group exhibition. The COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible for Stavanger Art Museum to carry out its planned exhibition programme, at the same time as artists in the region were seriously affected by the cancelling of exhibitions and scheduled projects.

Given the current circumstances, the museum grateful for the opportunity to create an exhibition that presents some of the breadth and quality in the field of art in our region. The exhibiting aims to present a vision of the current artistic practice within our region and does not have a comprehensive theme. You will find art works examining the role of the artist, material and media specific explorations, humorous and poetic works, views on our contemporary culture, works that relate to nature and perceptions of the landscape, works thematizing violence and abuse and works that look at society's and the individual's vulnerability in a time of extreme stress.

The exhibition title can be interpreted in several ways. We see it as a metaphor for how the pandemic restricts our freedom of movement. It could also refer to an experience the public can participate in when visiting the exhibition.
